No, a hub will not work because the router has a few functions a hub/switch does not have, such as the ability to be configured to talk to your broadband modem and automatically assigning IP addresses and subnets to your computers.

No. The router assigns each computer on the network an internal IP address, which is needed to access the net. A network hub, or switch, will not assign an IP, and most internet providers server will block multiple IP's trying to access their service from one location. But, if you don't have both computers on at the same time, which means only one IP in use at a time, then the hub will work.

Unless your cable company will let you have two IP addresses, then you have to have a router. A router has a built in DHCP server which uses one IP address from your cable modem and distribute unique IP addresses to both your computers. A router has a hardware firewall, a hub on the other hand provides zero protection from the nasty stuff out there.
