I would like to sell my candy baskets to local small businesses in my neighborhood (in CT) and need some pointers on how to go about it and get some results. These are Valentines Day themed, and I'm afraid of getting stuck with 100 of these and no buyers.

Make up a brochure using your computer and mail them to the companies you are considering plus many others. Be sure to include many forms of contact information, phone, address, email, etc. Take pictures of the different styles of baskets to include in your brochure.

I would first make up some sample baskets, not too many. For yourself, compile a list of possible businesses you think may be interested in your product. Phone these businesses, and ask about what time a manager is in. You can go by the business to show the product and inquire about their interest as well as their ability to choose to sell the product. Unfortunately some businesses will be tied up in their own red tape. If someone indicates an interest in your product, you need to be ready with an explanation of benefit to them and to their customer. Be ready to answer questions about what sort of pricing you have, what portion of profit will the store receive. I would suggest visiting florist shops and independent gift stores, maybe also antique shops where people might be such a gift as an impulse or in combination with another item. Don't assemble very many baskets until you have commitments from stores. You might still get some extras, but you can give these out among your friends, and reconsider your approach for next year.

I would start small and sell at craft fairs first, that way you can get a general idea if they are big sellers in your area...or what needs to be improved if anything...then when you approach a business you can tell them about your luck selling at craft fairs......or ebay.
