Well, having an HP computer like yourself I can help you. Follow these steps:
1. Purchase the desired memory via: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/search/search_request.do?pageName=searchresults
2. Make sure your computer is UNPLUGGED AND OFF
3. Open up the back-end of your laptop using a screwdriver and locate the area where the Motherboard is (Note: it should be near the CPU fan)
4. On the Motherboard, locate the memory module "holding bays"
5. Place the memory module into the bay and gently press down until you see it slide in and click into place
6. Lower the mini bars next to the "holding bays"
7. Re-hinge the backing to your HP laptop
8. Cover the back up and make sure nothing is exposed (Wires, etc . . . )
9. Turn on your computer, and the system should start up normally
10. Do the usual startup process and wait until you are at your desktop and the Operating System (OS) should Plug-And-Play the memory module and it should be ready to use
Enjoy a faster computer!! : )

If your not very good with computers, I suggest taking it to Best Buy, if you buy it from them, they will put it in. If not do a search for your computer models specifications. If its an Hp laptop, it will be on the top right corner of the screen, just search yahoo for its specs, You will most likely find if its a newer laptop that it is ddr2 memory. The cheapest place to get it will be ebay, depending on how much you want. 1 GB should be more than enough for the average user, so id suggest buying 2x512 mb sticks. On Hps they make it very easy to install, there is a panel on the bottom around the middle of the laptop, unscrew it and wallah, there are your current ram sticks, just take them out and replace.(turn the computer off first)

Go to HP.com and lookup your specific computer by the service tag #. You can then click on an upgrades button to see what is available. You dont have to buy it from HP, as you can usually get better memory for less elsewhere.

Um. Find out what kind of memory it is, better yet, find your laptop model and then go to hp.com or somewhere that sells laptop hard drives and search for the kind compatible with your make. :)
