I recently took this vacation, I live right by chicago and I got there by car in about 8 hours. It will save you quite a bit of money to drive and belive me that you will be spending a lot of money once you get there :)

mileage is 288.7 Miles and trip takes about 4 hours driving nonstop but I had a pregnant wife at the time that had to stop every 20 minutes

It would be faster by car considering you don't have to wait to check baggage, board your flight, go to baggage claim then rent a car. Sure the flight my be only a couple hours but you'll spend longer in the airport dealing with security and getting and checking baggage then driving

About 300 miles from Chicago to Sandusky, about 60 from Cleveland to Sandusky.

The worst part of driving from Chicago will be getting through Chicago and northwest Indiana. It's one of those areas where they install construction signs permanently in concrete!

Depending on how long you want to spend on that part of your trip and what else you want to see, your best bet might be either
-- fly to Cleveland and drive back to Sandusky as you're considering (not a bad drive at all)
or
-- take the South Shore Railroad from downtown Chicago to South Bend (or the bus,Tri-State Coach/United Limo, from O'Hare or Midway) -- either will take you to the South Bend Regional Airport, where you can rent a car. If you have time, hang out a day or two in SB, see Notre Dame and a bunch of other sites. Or just hop on the Indiana Toll Road and head due east to Sandusky, about 200 easy miles. On the way, you could stop in Toledo, which has a good zoo and a good art museum.

American, Continental, United all fly between Chicago and Cleveland. I think United flies at least some of its schedule with 757's. The smaller regional jets are really very safe, though, and actually a little more comfortable, IMHO.

Chicago to Sandusky is about 300 miles...Cleveland is just 65 miles past Sandusky. If you drove you would get to Sandusky first. The car might be cheaper but not faster. 300 miles would take about 5 hours counting stopping to eat or fueling or using the restroom.
