Jose Reyes today may be a little bit better offensive wise but defensively I would say they are evenly matched even though Reyes has a better fielding percentage. Granted Jeter hit .343 and Reyes only .300 Reyes excites the team, has a better HR, R, 3B and SLG percentage than Jeter does in 06. cant go by careers because Jeter has had more time to do great things then Reyes. NO doubt Jeter is a great baseball player though.

No, I'm not a Jeter-hater. I'm an A's fan and has nothing against Jeter. But still, I have to give credit to Albert Pujols. Potential triple-crown winner every year. So I think he's the best overall baseball player. Jeter comes in around 3rd or 4th, with A-Rod (one bad year doesn't make you overall bad) or Big Papi somewhere in there.

I think when you take everything into consideration, yes. A great hitter, exceptional fielder, but more important a great team leader. He is the captain of the most difficult franchise in professional sports and is able to handle the pressure of the New York media. That's takes a very special person to do that and still produce on the field. It's a shame that the so called baseball fan doesn't appreciate his situation. Derek Jeter is truly the best overall player in baseball today. And by the way, I'm a Phillies fan!

I am not a Jeter hater, but I am not a Jeter fan either. He is a very good player, but there is no way he is the best player in the MLB today. Maybe in his prime, he meant more to his team than any other player, but as of now, he is entering his 30s and thus, the decline of his career and level of play will begin soon. He had a good season in 2006, I grant him that, but he strikes out too much for a contact hitter, and doesn't hit for enough power to make up for those high strikeout totals. He doesn't show the same level of discipline at the plate as someone like Albert Pujols does. He has a great lineup to protect him, whereas Pujols has a pretty weak lineup around him. I would really say Pujols is the best, because of his clutch hitting, power, contact ability, plate discipline, toughness to strike out, and his ability to perform well and lead his team to victory in spite of a weak supporting cast.

Derek Jeter is a great player; however he is not the best overall player in the MLB today.

Derek Jeter is very overated, and especially playing in New York makes him very overated. Put it this way, the Yankees have a better shortstop on their team than Derek Jeter, and that is A-Rod.

There are much better players than Jeter which have a huge impact on a lineup.

I hate Boston, though I must admit, David Ortiz is one of the best hitters in the game, due to hitting many clutch, walk-off homeruns; however you can argue that Ortiz is also over-rated, by just playing DH without playing defence, and that he hits in a hitter-friendly Fenway Park, in front of Manny. I must say he is a bit overated also. I think Hafner is better than Ortiz, he is very under-rated, playing with Cleveland. So is Ortiz the best overall player? I do not think so.

In my opinion, I think Pujols is the best overall. He is 27 years old, and last year lead St. Louis to a World Series, is always consistent, is a career .332 hitter, has 250 career HR, 758 career RBI's and a career .419 OBP, and a .629 SLG. Out of all players in the MLB, if I wanted to build my team around someone, it would be Pujols.

Jeter is a great player and many Yankee fans love him. Who wouldn't love a SS like Jeter on their team? Heck, I'd take him anyday. The Yankee's are lucky to have a solid player like Jeter.

Overall, Jeter is a great player though not the best overall in baseball player. A-Rod is a much better player than Jeter, and he was a shortstop also until traded. Jeter is over-rated. He'll post up solid numbers, though they are not the best in baseball . Pujols (27), is the best overall player in baseball today. Take into consideration his age, his consistency, his stats, and you have yourself the best overall baseball player today, perhaps one of the best all-time someday.

Red Soxs Fan- Jeter is the only player on the Yankees who can do damage consitently. When he has a bad game, it doesn't effect him throughout the series. There are so many levels to determine the best overall baseball player today.

Jeter is one of the best players around. You can't measure his intangibles. Jeter is consistent on offense, a great defender, and as mentioned numerous times his leadership and work ethic are second to none.

The best overall player is something that can't really be decided. Pujols is the best offensive player, but his defense is above average. You got Torri Hunter (who I hate) who is an amazing defender, but again, above average on the offensive side. Big Papi is quite possibly the best power hitter, but he doesn't play any defense.

I don't think you can say there is one best all around player. I think you have to root for your favorites. This could be argued for a very long time, but if it is an argument, Jeter is definitely towards the top.

i agree with most of these other answers that pujols is the better player and i would put jeter 2nd when u are talking overall player...the thing that makes him stand out is that he plays one of the most difficult positions in baseball and he is very good at it....he is also one of the greatest leaders of the game when it comes to teammates, considering the other players on the team, and he will become a great coach in the future. he will consistantly be a close runner for the mvp for a couple more years to come, but to put him as the best i would have to say no, and i am a yankee-hater lol.

While not a Yankees fan, Id have to say Alex Rodriguez is the best overall player in the game, considering he really is actually a short stop. Then Albert Pujols, followed by Johan Santana and Derek Jeter. Jeter is the best personality, not the best player.
