I have a win 98SE and just bought win XP also I bought a linksys 5 port network hub. I get internet on XP but not on 98SE. Also I have ethernet cables (huge "phone" plugs) but I think I need something different for the 98SE like a square metal thing on one end (goes to modem) and a rectangular metal thing (plugs in just under mouse port) on
the other end?

You need an Ethernet adapter in the Windows 98 computer.

Windows 98 has very limited support for USB > Ethernet adapters. New ethernet cards are easy to install. Your computer most likely will have a PCI slot available, so you need a PCI Ethernet card. They cost about $20-30 new. Then just cable it to your hub after the driver install. Should work great.

You didnt say how you are connecting to the internet. On your XP computer, do this: Start > Network Connections. Look for something like "Local Area Connection", Double click and click on the "support" tab. If your IP address starts with 192.168 then you have a DHCP server which is good. Your 98 computer should be fine.

If the address starts with different numbers, then you have a private address and you NEED a router/firewall for two reasons: 1/ Get another address for your 98 computer. 2/ Protection against hackers being able to directly connect to your computer.

You should invest in a PCI ethernet adapter. you can also get an adapter that changes usb ports into ethernet if you don't feel like opening up your computer. From there you can get a router to split your connection between your computers.
