Early models had serious problems. I bought my first one on Jan 1, 2006, and it died in May. I sent it in as it was under MS warranty, and the replacement they sent me worked until early Dec. I sent it back to them, as it was still under warranty, and they sent me a new one.
From everything I have seen on the web on forums, blogs, etc, people who have models made after about June of last year aren't having problems with them. Which makes me happy because I have been given a July build model in my second replacement.
They HAD problems, but they seem to have really taken steps during the first 6 months to fix them, and they seem to have worked. Models built in maybe the past 6 or 7 months seem to have all the kinks worked out of them.
I would say that anymore, no, heating is not an issue.
Oh, as for when my other 2 were built, the first one was Dec 2005, the second Nov 2005.

I got mine right before Christmas in 2005, and I haven't had any problems with it. But then again, I take care of it. I put it on an open shelf, away from the radiator, and I dust it once a week to try to keep the vents opens.
I think a lot of the overheating is made up by Nintendo and Sony fanboys trying to dissuade people from buying the 360. As long as you take good care of the 360, it shouldn't overheat. Don't put it on a carpet where the carpet can block the air vents. Don't put it inside a shelf without circulation. Don't put it near the radiator.

not anymore. when it first came out, a lot of 360s overheated, but newer models shouldn't do that. of course, if you're still worried you could buy an intercooler for $15 at circuit city or something.

i had a xbox 360, got it a few months after it came out. i treated it like a king. but it ended up having hardware "breakdowns". and sometimes the lid didnt open up for me. but im guessin they fixed that up wit the newer models
