Digestion begins the instant that we put food into our mouths. We have enzymes in our saliva that begin the process as we chew the food. Then the bulk of digestion takes place in the stomach and the small bowel. Most of the serious work of digestion is finished by the time the foodstuffs get to the large bowel. The large bowel is mostly responsible for water absorption from the now digested food, leaving behind the non-digestible stuff.

Chemically:
Starch begins in the mouth.
Protein begins in the stomach.
Fat begins in the small intestine.
All digestion ends in the small intestine.
The large intestine (colon) just contains waste to be egested.

It begins at the entrance of the mouth as our saliva contain some of the needed bacteria to break down the food and ends as it.....well, makes a splash.
Sort of like the idea that the second we are born we have started the dying process.

Think of it this way.. top to bottom.. in one door and out the other..you eat it and delete it.. you drink it and leak it.. you chew and eschew... it starts at the mutt and ends at the butt.. some where in between the good stuff is taken in and the bad stuff is rebuffed.. got the picture?
