Peristalsis is the muscular contractions in your digestive system that help move food along. It happens in your esophagus, your small intestine, and your large intestine. Picture a bean in a straw. As you squeeze part of the straw behind the bean, the bean moves forward. In your body, the muscles do the squeezing.
