Check out the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students. www.csfes.org that where you start. It costs $5,000 to $10,000 plus you need $200 to $300 per month in allowance. You lose school credit in high school but in college you get school credits. If you are 11 then you can start saving your money. Then you have to be real careful because a lot of students have their money stolen. Try a summer tour with a good agency and stay in hostels. Don't live with a strange family at age 11. Too much can happen and you are in a foreign country so USA laws will not protect you. If you don't speak a foreign language then try Australia. There are scholarship s for high school students to Germany that you can check out but host families are not checked for criminal backgrounds. So you can start learning a foreign language That would be smart

Becoming a foreign exchange student is virtually impossible before you hit high school or college. While formal programs are very hard to come by, there are other programs that would allow you to travel and meet students from other countries, like People to People and Student Ambassadors. I've posted the link below. Good Luck!

I was an exchnaeg student last year. You dont need to know the language to go on exchnage. you pick it up really fast and thats the cool thing about going. All the kids I know who wentare now fluent in another language and its pretty sweet. But yeah its pretty hard to find a program that will let you go in jr high. Once your in highschool there are all kinds of opportunities if you want to go for 6 weeks or even 1 year. The program I went with is called rotary if you go to www.rotary.org and look up international programs and the youth exchnage program it will have all the information about it. I guarentee their is a rotary club in your area, and if you show interest now youll have an easy time getting chosen to go. The great thing about rotary exchnage is that they sponser you and you only have to pay for your ticket to get their. Whereas with other programs you have to pay even to stay in the house while you are their and it usually costs 10 -15000 dollars. Its a very very safe program with insurance included with everything and the families you stay with have had many exchnage students before so you almost never have problems. Check out the website though.. Its an amazing experience. I hope you get the opportunity to go.
