Both pennies and nickels have smooth edges, so if you feel the edges and there are no ridges, it's either a penny or a nickel, and since a nickel is bigger than a penny, you should be able to tell the difference. Quarters and dimes are ridged, but a quarter is a lot bigger than a dime and dimes are also thinner.

Hi Mandy, here's how I can figure out:

- the penny: Feel the smooth edge
- the dime: The size
- the nickel: The size and smooth edge. You can easily feel the raised part of Monticello too.
- the quarter: The size.
