Here's a good example...
I have two people I call "best friend". One makes decent money, house is paid off, etc, and I have known her a very long time. The other lives in a crappy place where the floor is damaged, has little money, etc. I have only known her a few years. Recently, I was out of work for six months. During that time, I had serious car trouble. The friend with no money, GAVE me a cell phone, and added me to her phone plan, in case I got stuck somwhere. She has yet to ask for any money. She also took me out to eat at least once a week, gave me gas money, invited me to her home for Thanksgiving AND Christmas, and lent me some money. The friend, with more money, offered me fifty dollars one time. I also received loans from two different people online, neither of which I have ever met. I was amazed and confused
at the outpouring of love from everybody, except the one, that I thought I could expect it from.

When everything in your life is taken away: job, love, even liberty, those that then stand by you are your true friends. The lucky thing is most of us are never so down and out that we have to find out who are true friends are, for those of us who have been there it is a truly eye opening experience, people step up who you would not expect and people you trusted cut and run

When you grow up and get older and lead your separate lives and these people are still there. I have a friend from high school whom I have been friends with for 10 years and she is my best friend to this day. We've been through periods of distance, and we've had our ups and downs as friends. Also, when you meet someone who tells you what you need to hear and not what you want to hear, that person is a true friend.

Every relationship is different. I found out who my real friends were when I found out I was pregnant. I could not understand for the life of me why some of them were upset that I was pregnant. I try to apologize to them because I couldn't go out with them like we used to...then I got sick of apologizing and realized I'm better off without them.

When being my friend is "inconvenient," but they're there anyway, I know.
When I feel weakness or doubt, and they strengthen me, I know.
When they take true pleasure in my happiness, I know.
When they pay me compliments for no good reason, I know.
And I try to do the same in return.
