The relationship is complex. Joe is Pip's brother-in-law, and for a time they are dear friends. Pip, however, spurns Joe once he begins to live the grand life. Joe never falters in his loyalty and friendship.

I read this book a while ago but I think I remember Pip being portrayed as a fairly vunerable, sweet boy. This is Dickens we're talking about and he does pile on the sentimentality like it's going out of style so it's not a hard question to answer if you've read the book recently. Just look for well worn sentimental images like the poor orphaned child, death of parents, particularly of the mother and signs of vunerability in the character.
