Depends what you mean by richest.

Three definitions:

(1) Per capita income: this means how rich the 'average' person from that country is. By this definition, the USA is definitely in the top 3, but may or may not be #1 - there are a few small nations that have high average incomes due to oil (Bahrain) or tax shelters (Monaco).

(2) Gross National Product: the value of goods and services produced in a country. By this standard the USA is definitely #1 in the world - there's simply no contest!

(3) Amount of money owned by the nation versus amount it owes. By this standard the USA is very poor - it's a 'debtor' nation, whereas many other nations (especially in Europe and Asia) are 'lender' nations who are owed a lot of money from America.

Which do you mean?

Curious Question... some correctly ID'd Luxembourg on a per-capita GDP...

I'd like to know on "National Holdings" per capita... wouldn't that make the Vatican the richest ?? Uncounted wealth in art, gold, architecture... and a tiny population.

Of course the USA has fallen... we don't make much anymore in our quest to get a t-shirt for 4 dollars instead of 6 dollars.

I don't know that but I live in switzerland and we are rich, and most of us are rich. we have everything we need. we throw TV's that still work on our streets and sofas, and everything I have is from the second hand store yet the stuff comes from a villa and I buy it cheap. In africa people have to save more than a month for a TV, here you find them on the streets. Plus: we all are insured when we get ill, and we have one of the best, if not the best social service in the world. Noone lands on the streets here if he has no job. So, do you still think america is rich.

Being rich doesn't necessarily mean material wealth. Wherever people are the happiest is a true indication of being rich.
