I installed (or so I thought) a new DVD writer, but it does not show
up in My Computer. It ejects when I push the button so I think it is plugged in OK.

I misplaced the installation CD but downloaded the driver off the internet, but when I tried to install it, even the driver said there was no burner.
Help!
I am using windows and the burner is a Pioneer DVR-111D. When I search for new hardware, Windows can't find it.

I think I might have both my CD-Writer and DVD-writer set to master so I will try changing that, but I am sure that would not have such an effect.

Yeah...check your pin settings for Master / Slave. Try plugging in only the IDE cable to the new drive...leaving the other drive unplugged. You should also go into your bios on startup to check that the drive is visible...under secondary IDE....there may be a setting in their that disables the second drive. Check to make sure you didn't bend a pin in the DVD drive when you were plugging in the IDE ribbon cable. Make sure all cables are secure.

That shouldn't matter. You may need to keep installing it. You also may need to get different software for using it. The software may not see it or it does, but you aren't setting it for the burner.
