I agree with you. I lived in Germany for five years, and prostitution was legal there. The prostitutes had to have health exams, I think, twice a year and so disease is kept to a minimum, unlike here in the states where it's illegal and disease is rampant.

I think if a woman wants to sell it and a guy wants to pay for it, why not? Just more bureaucratical hypocrisy, as with marijuana being illegal but alcohol is not.

You have some valid points. In Canada, we de-criminalized prostitution a long time ago, but made a law against "communicating for the purposes of obtaining sex". The burden of the criminality of the act was placed onto the johns rather than the prostitutes. Now, I have to admit, the system doesn't work all that well, but it is a step in the right direction. I think though, that there is a significant difference between pornography acting and prostitution. Sure, both involve payment for sex, but everything else about it is different. Prostitution has almost always been seen as wrong, and generally made illegal. It is part of a system of abuse of women. Very often people who become prostitutes are not doing it voluntarily, but are forced to. If it really were just another business transaction, then maybe it could be okay. But it isn't. It is part of the long standing abuse of power, of women and sometimes even of children. The sex trade is fundamentally evil, and very difficult to make otherwise. Sex trade workers should not be treated as criminals, they are usually the victims.

I do not think it is a victimless crime. Most people, it is shown, who have been degraded so live very sad and sordid lives; not entirely most of the time by choice. Many of these are underage teens. It is at best, not a healthy life; mentally or physically. Even some of the countries who have legalised it recognise the unsavoury aspects of it. I would do a bit of research and see just what the word is; really. Many times drugs are involved; and disease is not far behind. It is far from a normal life.

It also does not encourage males to treat women with respect.

It is NOT legal all over Nevada. Only in certain counties and areas.

Personally, I don't think prostitution should be illegal. It is the choice of both the prostitute and the John, and unlike the relationship between drug dealers and drug addicts, the rest of society is not put in danger (violence associated with drugs--gang activity, etcetera). Centuries ago in Europe, prostitution used to be legal, and was indeed monitored by the government. That's what I think we need--professional prostitutes who are constantly checked for STDs, as well as spaces were the act would occur--for the safety of the prostitute (many prostitutes are murdered). While prostitution is a choice I would not make, I can see how desperate women would turn to this, and it does fulfill a valuable role in our society.

why do we have any laws? The laws were made based on peoples morals, but it doesn't seem like many people have good morals any more. If you ever become a prostitute maybe you will understand how terrible it is for someone to sell their body, there is a lot of tragedy mixed up with it and most people are desperate. It is more serious than a simple roll in the sack.

Prostitution is illegal, because it is controlled by people who rent women out for money, and use the money so earned for their own ends, drugs, cars, jewelry, and other women. I believe that if it were to be controlled by the government, and a monthly health check required of the girls, which would be required to be posted, along with a government issued photo identification, and well regulated, it would be alright. Any woman entering in to this business, would do so voluntarily, and would be allowed to keep her earnings.

Prostitution is illegal because a large majority of Americans thinks it's immoral. They like getting in other people's business. Condoms do not prevent STDs

Actually, more STD's would be prevented if it was legalized. There would be all sorts of regulations including STD testing as well as better access to condoms.... The reason it's illegal is that we live in a country that is and always has been governed by Judea Christian laws and as much as we want to talk about separation of church and state, there really isn't any when it comes to laws of "morality". Welcome to the free world.
