Betta fish are really very entertaining fish. They can be all sorts of really pretty colors and have beautiful fins, and have a lot of personality. It's been said that bettas can even come to recognize their owner (or whoever ends up feeding them, since they love food).

First of all, your mirror idea really is a good one, but only in small quantities. It's actually recommended to place a mirror near your betta's tank for about 15-20 minutes a day, so they can get some exercise. Any more than that, and they might wear themselves out too much. The reasons your betta flares up at his reflection is because he thinks it is another nearby male betta. Male bettas will ALWAYS fight when you put them together, so never put two male bettas in the same tank.

Bettas are also tropical fish. They prefer a tank temperature of 78-82 degrees Fahrenheit. Any colder than 70 degrees, they tend to get sluggish, lethargic, and somewhat pale. So it's best to have a heater in your betta's tank, or at least keep him in a warm room.

Contrary to popular belief, bettas also like having lots of space, just like any other fish. Yes, bettas can survive in a half-gallon container. But they won't thrive. They'll be pale, look sad, and not move around a lot. The recommended minimum tank size for a betta is 2.5 gallons, but 5 gallons is even better. Plus, if you keep one in a 5 gallon tank, you can filter the tank and avoid 100% water changes, which are stressful to the fish.

One of the reasons that bettas tend to be a little bit easier to keep than other fish is that they don't need an aeration system. They don't get their oxygen from the water like other fish - they breathe it from the surface with the use of a body part called the labyrinth organ. This is why those vases with the flower on top that people put bettas in is completely unhealthy. If the betta cannot easily access the surface, it will slowly suffocate to death.

Bettas are also very good jumpers. It is very important that you keep the top of your betta's tank covered at all times. This cover, though, also needs of way of letting in air, so the betta can breathe. Don't ever teach your betta to jump for his food! This could teach him bad habits, and you might walk in to find your betta on the floor someday.

Bettas also have a tendency to be very finicky eaters. I got lucky with my two bettas - they'll eat anything! - but some bettas will pick and choose their foods. It's also best to keep a betta on a varied diet, instead of feeding it just one kind of food. Good food suggestions include betta bites, freeze-dried bloodworms, freeze-dried brine shrimp, and freeze-dried daphnia. Live versions of the aforementioned foods are great too, if you can afford it :)

If you take good care of your betta, he'll probably live for anywhere from 1-5 years. When you see a betta at a store, they are already anywhere from 6 months to one year old. This is because younger bettas do not have the long, flowing fins and therefore look less pretty.

As I mentioned before, male bettas do not get along. Males also do not get along with females, except in the case of breeding, which I would not attempt until you are much more comfortable in your understanding of bettas. Female bettas, however, can live together - sometimes. This can be somewhat hard to pull off. Females must live in at least groups of 3, and they will establish a pecking order of sorts. If you can manage to get some through a breeder, you can get 3 or more sister bettas together, and they will live peacefully together, having known all of each other. But if you just grab 3 random females from a pet store...it might work, or you might end up with a dead female or two. As for other fish, bettas can generally live with anything that doesn't have too long of fins, or isn't too aggressive. If a betta thinks another fish is a betta, they will attack it.

So there you have it - a pretty basic overview of bettas. If you want to learn anything else that wasn't covered here, I suggest checking out one of the sources below. Good luck!

Bettas also known as chinese fighting fish are really neat pets to own. They hate other male bettas so that's why they flare up when you place a mirror in front of them cause they think it's another betta. The females are different though they don't fight. if you place two males together they will fight until one dies. Also males blow bubbles in there tanks and make the top of the water look like a bunch of bubbles they do this for the female so she can lay her eggs inside the bubbles. good luck with your fish.

i become in petco the different day and all of their "tanks" designed only for bettas are thoroughly incorrect. They promote those tiny "betta bowls" and those fashion designer tanks that do not actually have a lid. they actually have this ingredient the position you are able to make all of it fairly with rocks and lighting fixtures and contained sooner or later you would possibly want to easily rigidity your betta out and kill it. No ask your self individuals are so stupid. even as they see those betta products they are going to imagine "oh, this become made for a betta, it can be the suitable ingredient" yet its no longer. It sickens me to imagine of the infinite bettas that leap from their fashion designer tanks and die or are left in tiny little bowls. human beings, for the most section, purchase bettas because they're fairly. in spite of the undeniable fact that unhappy, unhappy, chilly bettas are literally not fairly. If a betta is in a brilliant warmth tank his colorings will be one thousand cases prettier and he will be a lot more effective energetic and relaxing to observe.
