hi im thinking about getting a new wireless router. My current router is a dlink DI-514. The performance i get from this router is crappy compared to what my friends receive for their own routers. We all have the same internet provider and speed. My internet provier is Charter High-Speed Internet 10.0 at 10 Mbps. My di-514 is giving me downloads that are at 40kb/s and that is very slow compared to everyone in my city who uses charter high speed.I am slower than 85% of the people. I got that info from one of the websites that test your upload and download rate(forgot which one). My question is (1) is it something in my configuration for my router that is causing this? and can it be fixed?(2) can you recommend and better routers that match the speed of a non wireless connection. Thankyou!

I recommend and use a freebie from http://www.speedguide.com called the Broadband Optimizer. This makes substantial changes to your system configuration to recieve the fastest rates possible. If this doesn't speed you up then yes, the router needs to be replaced. You should look for one that is 802.11 b/g compatible, as the G routers have a lot faster speeds. Of course you may also need to change the adapter card of the laptop if it has one to meet the new standard. For either of these I highly recommend http://www.geeks.com and http://www.pricewatch.com Hope this helps

it may not be in your router at all....the are other components involved in wireless.
A wireless router and a wireless card...
the wireless card in your computer or laptop could be an old one....it could have the wrong or outdated drivers. Check the make of your wireless card and look on the web for updated...recent drivers.

Also with a cable company....the lines is shared with all neighborhood...if everyone is downloading files are the same time..good luck.

Your wireless setup maybe completely open....and other people are using your wireless internet router and connecting to the internet for free.....at your expense.

First try connecting a wired Ethernet connection to your computer to see if the problem is indeed with the wireless connection. If you still get the same problem than take it a step further and connect directly to your Internet modem. If the problem remains contact you ISP. If the problem goes away try a different router.

Just keep the packaging in case something else is the problem such as (your computer) and you want to return the router.

One very common problem is WEP encryption. this really slows down every net transaction.

If you have this turned off, it could still be tons of other things.
some common things are position of the router relative to your computer/obstructions like walls, and also electronic interference like cordless phones etc.

I like lynksis products and never have a problem with them.
Also, you may want to wait and see if draft-N becomes accepted. This new wireless protocol is way faster but a little spendy.
