I looked into this myself and I found out it is called "pink mold". I don't know where it comes from, but most people seems to get it near drains because water tends to sit there for long periods of time around the drain ring. Anyplace in your home that has standing water (even only a few drips) for a long period of time can end up with pink mold. alhtough I tend to notice it more on sink and tub surfaces. I don't see it happening much on stainless steel (kitchen sink). You just have to clean these areas more often. It also takes a little elbow greas around the rings to get it all out.

Replace the washers in your faucets. A bad washer allows the water to constantly drip out of the spout. Sometimes, if you have a shower head connected above, the "switch" to change from shower to faucet allows water from the shower head to drop back into the spout. This is normal.

turn off your main tap outside and go inside and change the tap washer, this could be the problem.
