well i tried playing second life but it ran kinda slow on my computer but ive got a pretty good up to date hard dirve but you should try it out its like the sims online but free

Diablo II is a great online game, plus there is a mod out as well (200+mb) that adds a whole load of everything (enemies, bosses, weapons, items, etc.)--The mod is HU, Hell Unleashed.
World of Warcraft is running a free 10-day trial, and allows you to download the massive 3gig+ installer. Also, there are a bunch of people (I'm finding out) that are tired of WoW (played it for a long time, did everything) that paid their accounts months in advance and are either selling them for cheap, or just giving them away.
Try Emulation. Playstation 1 and SNES mostly. Tales of Destiny I and II for PS1, Legend of Mana, even try the old Secret of Mana's for the SNES. Tons of rpgs playable online, even if they are not strictly pc games.
PS1 Emulator? ePSXe.
SNES Emulator? Zsnes or snes9x. You may have to go back a bit to get the right zsnes with netplay enabled.
To allow online capability with ePSXe, you will need Kaillera server (www.kaillera.com) and the latest cyberpad plug-in.
There are guides for emulation, and it's not hard at all...just a process.

Adventure Quest, you can create a free or a full account for 14.95
Dragon Fable, associated with adventure quest, 14.95
Maple Story is a good one, you can download this file

puzzle pirates and club penguin and you have the choice to bea memner and pay for both of them. plus you can google some too. if you are looking for downloadable ones .. there are tons of them...... but regular ones, the non downloadable ones, are limited. most of the ones i have listed above are on miniclip .com... these are kiddy games but diablo 2 is good too and second life. i had some trouble with that one though.

diablo 2 it rocks. its free (online play is free, you do have to buy the game) and it has great replay value.
