That I do not know. But I would guess, if it has no reinforcing? Want to hear something really wierd, now.

The higher the Karat, the weaker the gold. No Kidding! Because the alloy used in gold is always much stronger than gold. Gold is actually a very soft metal. That is why it wears away on the old wedding bands, sometimes they even break through, I think.

So I would go for 10 K., no higher. I don't think you can really tell how much alloy is in it by just looking at it anyway. So why spend more? For what could be a weaker chain.

Go to a good store. They have all kinds of things those kiosks in the mall don't have.

Like expert attention, and a money back garentee, perhaps.

And if it breaks, no matter what it is, they are real good at fixing it. They have jeweller's right on hand, if they are a reputable place.

Not really.
As a rope chain the general make up is stronger than for instance, a figaro chain.
Having said that if you had 3 chains that were
1/- 9 carat
2/- 18 carat
3/- 24 carat

the 24 carat would be weakest, as the purer the gold is, the softer it is.
A 9 carat gold chain is pretty strong because there are other metals mixed in at the smelting process which make it harder.
