Back in the days of monarchy, it was not uncommon for family members to breed to keep the royal line, well, ROYAL. Unfortunately, that produced all kinds of genetic problems (hemophilia being one of them. That's why it's called "the royal disease").
It can cause mutations on all levels, ESPECIALLY if both parents carry the same chromosome for a genetic abnormality, and they both meet to create the same zygote.
It's pretty creepy stuff.
There are enough men and women in this world, though, to where you really CAN look outside of your family for a mate to help you produce children. Not only will the children be healthier, but it will keep you out of jail. lol

It's taboo in many cultures. It's a biological response.
There are communities in the world called founder populations where only a few people started an entire community isolated from other groups. Because of the isolation, many people can trace their ancestry back to a few common ancestors.
Now, in genetics, people can often be carriers of genetic abnormalities, even if they don't show signs of any problems. However, if two people who are carriers get together, they have a 25% chance of having a child with a problem, a 50% chance of having a carrier like themselves, and a 25% of a "normal" offspring. The more carriers get together, the more chance that the children will have a problem. You can see this in Finland, which has a lot of genetic disorders; among the Amish; or in the past, in Nantucket Island. Nantucket used to have such a large congenital deaf community that almost everyone there knew sign language.

Yes, just as when they interbreed cats and dogs too much. Many purebred cats and dogs have a lot of of medical issues and malformations because their dna is all screwed up. Many royals in the past had a lot of health issues and mental issues because they were all so interbred. Many were anemic and many were just plain insane. In one way or another, we pretty much are all related to one another, but when two people breed that have very similar DNA, there are a lot of medical issues that usually arise from it.
