First of all, have you tried shutting your system down completely and then restarting it? If not, try that, because Windows should find hardware that is not ready to operate and then ask you if you want to install it. When you say yes, it will take you through the hardware wizard. During this process it will ask you if you have a specific place that you want to look for drivers. Put in the installation disk that came with the unit (CDR/DVD). If the unit came with the computer, then put in the original disk that came with the computer.
If neither of these works, then go to Windows Update and it will take you to the Microsoft Website. You can download drivers for free from there and save them to a file on your computer. When prompted by the Hardware Installation Wizard, specify that file, and it will re-install the driver(s) from that file.
All else failing to fix the problem, get ahold of the Microsoft Technical Support on their website and they may be able to step you through it.
Last resort, call a technician: Geek Squad, etc.
Oh, also, if you have Best Buy or Circuit City in your area, they usually have a computer support and repair place just inside the front door. They are very helpful and will give free advice at times on simple troubleshooting (to them this would probably be simple, but to us it's a real pain!).
Good Luck!!!!

FIRST, discipline the kid and teach her NOT to touch. A 3 year old should know better by now!! (MY daughter knew by 6 months!!)
SECOND Try a restore to the time you know it WAS working.
THIRD use recovery to "repair" NOT "reload" the system.
The CD/DVD drivers are included in windows XP.
If this doesn't work THEN try tech support. It is most likely a software problem, unless your 3 year old stuck something in the drive and broke it!!
I had one client with a "broke" drive; it turned out that their kid had gotten the drive open and inserted a "open face" peanut butter sandwich!! The warranty did NOT cover the repair costs, (intentional damage), and they were somewhat upset!

Bad answers. You do not need a CD-ROM driver as that is a part of the operating system and is built in. If it is not recognizing any CD or DVD, the drive probably needs to be replaced. The software that you use will not do any good if the drive is not recognizing the media you put into it. The best place to get a replacement is at http://www.geeks.com or http://www.pricewatch.com Hope this helps

Okay, first of all, it seems that the device is there, but you want to make sure. Take the CD-ROM/DVD drive out of the computer, and stick it back in. Windows should heal itself.
if that doesnt work, then make sure your CD-ROM/DVD is in your computer, go to control panel>classic view(its on the left side)>add hardware, and go through the wizard, and when you find the CD-ROM/DVD device, then install it, or troubleshoot with windows.
this will enable the device if it is disabled.
if all this doesnt work, beat your computer with a metal bat.

Hmm, I dont thin that cd/dvd is using driver. (Except of you want to burn cd).
But you can try to open your pc casing, (make sure you shutdown first), try to reattach the cable for the cd rom.
Then try to see if it working or not. If its working now, clean you cd rom with cd cleaner.
Hope this help.

If windows restore is turned on, try that first. If that fails, try searching the web for the exact error message you get.

Are you using Nero? 6 or later? There's a toolkit supplied that will give you all sorts of info on your drive
Is the little light on? Does it come on when you reboot?
Does the door open and close?
