You can get your bachelor's in either education, sociology or psychology. It depends which of those would help you the most. What other careers interest you? Keep that in mind as you may want to pick the major that will leave you with other choices.
After you get your bachelor's, then you will need a master's in school counseling.

Hey there. You can major in Sociology, Psychology, or Mental Health. Some colleges offer specific degrees for counseling. Usually you can find a job in that field with only a Bachelors Degree. Good luck to you.

Pick the state you want to work in first, then look up the requirements.
Many states now have many state specific requirements and the universities in those states frequently cater to the in-state requirements.
http://www.collegegrad.com/careers/proft38.shtml has generic information under Training, Other Qualifications,
and Advancement
You might find a school with a specialty program for it, or do education (teaching) if the state also requires that license, or pshychology to better prepare you for the master's part of the requirement.

Psychology is a decent choice but hardly a must. Most school guidance counselors begin their careers as teachers and just eventually move into being a guidance counselor, much like many principals. At the primary school level, it may make more sense to major in psychology or a similar field, but at the secondary level your major is inconsequential.

Psychology or counseling. Many colleges offer a counseling major for that very purpose. Also you might want to consider minoring in education as well. Good luck. :)

You can pursue either a fine arts track or for human services or psychology. During your Master's education you will take special classes in relation to whatever your state requires. Finally, you will have to take specific tests to be certified as a school counselor.
