Ashley, have you ever personally asked a black person about the n word. Have you actually spoken to one black person about this issue. If you have then please excuse me for taking your question the wrong way. I am 41 years old and I have only had one white person asked me about using the n-word. I explain to that person and I will explain to you, that is not a word that is tolerated by me, in my house, in my family and in any of my friends. It is not okay for anyone to call me the N-Word. I do not care what the Rap Music say or do, I was not raised that way.

The "n" word is associated with slavery and hanging. Skinheads and other racist have used it when beating black men. It's a highly charged word coming from a white person. Some Black people decided that they would take the sting out of it by using it themselves and it would no longer be offensive. It hasn't worked. Rev. Al Sharpton and others are mounting a campaign to get anyone (including rap singers) from using it. This question has been asked before. Before posting, type in your question at the top of the page in the "search for question" box under "Ask"

well for one we arent trying to be mean to each other, u guys still use that word in a derogatory way, when that stops then u guys can say it, i honestly think the word needs to go away when i think of it i think about how my grandmother was called that, she hates the word. and another thing why are some of u guys obsessed with the word, i mean damn get over it, does it sound that cool or something? like i said when white people stop using it in a bad way then i guess u can say it, so u need to talk to the racist people about this issue

The n-word is a nasty remnant of discrimination and oppression. I'm not sure why some black folks use it - maybe because if they use it, it softens its sting a little bit.

The closest analogy I can think of is being teased about something personal. It might be sort of okay for a family member to tease you about something like your hairstyle, but it would be just plain rude for someone outside the family to do that.

So. We're all part of the family of man, but we're not all part of the family of dark-skinned people. For those of us who aren't, it isn't polite to use the n-word.

I may not understand all of the hows and whys of it myself, but that's okay - I've come to the conclusion that sometimes I don't have to. All I have to do is try to get clear on what makes people comfortable and respect that.

Because white people who use the term typically have some sort of prejudice against blacks (don't get me wrong - not all do!). It's derogatory when a white person says it for the most part, because it's not said with good intentions, but is said to insult.

I don't use the n-word, nor do I condone it, but I understand why the double standard exists. African Americans often feel a kinship towards each other, and using the n-word amongst ourselves is like sibblings squabbling and making fun of each other. They may even fight at times between themselves, but very often they'll be very protective of one another when it comes to individuals outside of the household. It's one thing for brothers and sisters to pick on each other... another thing for someone else to do it.

If you've noticed, African Americans often exchange the n-word with latinos frequently, and other minorities as well, even their white friends. It's about familiarity (from the same root as family).

Usually if a black person refers to himself or other of his races that way, he is a N*****. Look at what type of person you see or hear using it. It's the blacks that are all about using people, making money, calling women ho's, selling drugs and putting on that tough guy gangsta image. Do you hear normal educated blacks using that word to refer to themselves or their friends? No, because they know how it might effect someone, and how derogatory it is to people of their race. So if you hear someone refer to himself that way, by all means go ahead and refer to him that way as well.
