Once anything that was personally created and put up for sale it cannot be used by others without permission.
BUT once it has reached the age of 20 years old. It becomes something known as public domain. That means anyone can use it and copy it. There are some restrictions, but that is the basic fact.
So advertising execs who are starving for some new ideas and tactics to advertise keep tab on what becomes public domain and use it.
I don't like it either. But this is why this occurs.

Blame Jacko. In a bidding war for the publishing rights to the Beatles catalogue, he farmed out his newly purchased booty to ad agencies for some pretty fat bank. That's when all this started. Yes, it's a shame, but the music industry has more than its fair share of greedy maggots and art , like anything else in the USA is worthless if it's not a commodity to be bought, sold and profitted from. Very sad.

Yeah, now I can't get rid of the association in my brain, and not only did it ruin a lot of songs for me,
but it actually repels me from the brand it tried to sell to me.
Like "lord won't you by me a mercedes Benz"--Janis Joplin.......Well, I it's interesting that they ignore the irony of the song used for the commercial....
I think the brand Porche should use the following verse and just clip that part and play it over and over....'
When the Who sold out big time, (mostly Pete Townsend), you just have to say to yourself, "gee, I guess there really is no integrity in rock..."
Except for Paul McCartney of course--You go Paul....
The other guys need the money I guess.--
Including I guess that ultraricherthanGod b*tch Yoko who sells out John Lennon's image at every single turn. She turned a dead man into a brand.

Funny how many people criticize The Who, who have always been the cheap gals on the corner - never even changed the name after Keith died - so why would anyone expect any traces of integrity from THEM? Otherwise, it's extra cash for no extra effort... no wonder everyone gives in. And why not? More people will hear you, in the end.

Because it sells. People succumb to the dollar signs. And yes it disgusts me greatly! When I hear the song on tv i usually can't stand to listen to it anymore.

I think it's all about the money. Corporate greed. Plus the artists who wrote the songs get money, too. I don't like it either, but unfortunately, that's was our great country is becoming. It's all about corporations and the bottom line, with our great music being no exception.

Music is their livelihood, they'll make money off it where they can because that's their career. It's art sure, but it's also a business.

the reason this stuff happens is that those bands get their rights sold to someone who doesnt aprreciate and protect it for what it is and it they sell the rights for commercials to make money.
