For this, you will have to by a cheap paperback by Barbara Tuchman called, "The Zimmerman Telegram." She describes how the British cracked the German diplomatic code, by which Germany telegraphed messages to its embassies in North and South America after the British had cut all the telephone cables between Europe and America in August 1914. In particular, the German Foreign Minister Zimmerman telegraphed to the German ambassador in Mexico City that he was to offer Mexico an offense-and-defense alliance against the U.S. Mexico was to invade the U.S., recovering territory lost during the 19th Century. Germany was to conduct submarine warfare against the U.S. The funniest thing is that the Germans had to use a long-range radio transmitter, first in Sweden, then in Germany, to transmit radio messages in their code. The U.S. had agreed in 1914 to accept German diplomatic messages at a U.S. Navy station on Long Island and relay them by Western Union to German embassies. As a result of this treachery, the U.S. declared war on Germany in June 1917.

If you didn't use code, the enemy could easily know where your location was, what's your next move and so on.
