The smell may be due to improper hygiene and can affect all men, regardless if they're circumcised or uncircumcised (though it tends to affect uncircumcised men a lot more).
It's important to wash the penis and surrounding area daily during a shower with water and mild (preferrably scentless) soap. If you're uncircumcised, retract the foreskin and wash the area underneath as you would any other part of your body. This usually suffices in keeping the smell at bay. Furthermore, if you're uncircumcised, you can retract your foreskin while peeing and wipe away the remaining urine when you're done. This keeps remaining urine from collecting under the foreskin and contributing to smell; thus, the smell should be greatly reduced for longer periods of time.
If none of the above works, it can be caused by something else. A yeast infection may produce a smell but no other symptoms. This is easily remedied with either oral or topical cream medication. Another factor in some people is actually diet. Sometimes when some people eat certain foods their bodies produce certain smells. If you eat very unhealthily, then this may definitely be a contributing factor.

Wash before sex. And wash thoroughly. If you are uncircumcised, make sure you pull the foreskin back and wash under it. Also try some baby powder after showering - this will slow down the return of the smell.
Some men produce more secretions in this area, and that's all the smell is. It is perfectly normal, but many partners do find it offensive.

If you are uncircumcised, you need to pull your foreskin right back to expose the groove behind the head and wash the whole thing very thoroughly with warm water and mild medicated soap at least twice every day and certainly before and after sex. Uncircumcised men accumulate a smelly deposit called smegma behind the foreskin which forms all the time and can never be completely eliminated. Circumcised men have better hygiene, comfort appearance to women, self-esteem and FAR better sexual sensation for both themselves and their female partner(s) You should consider getting circumcised for both your own and your wifes sake. There are no disadvantages to circumcision. All men should be circumcised.
