In the late nineteenth century, Japan underwent a massive overhaul of its economic, political, and social structure. This was known as the Meiji Restoration, and was the imperialization of Japan in terms threatening and acknowledged by the Western world. The Japanese adopted the German form of government with a representative body (the diet) and a strong leader. As Germany also had a monarch, who was the iconic but generally powerless leader, so the Japanese had their Emperor.

Japan has never been colonized by foreigners. The United States occupied Japan after defeating it in WWII, but never colonized it.
