It all depends on the species.......... some are vegetarian, and will only eat things like algae......... others are meat eaters, and will predate on other fish & mammals swimming in the water.......... while others are omnivourous (eat both plants and meat, including insects).

You can get good quality dried fish food at any good pet store and some supermarkets. You can also get live food - daphnia, brine shrimps and sometimes bloodworms. Most fish will eat all of that. Some are listed as vegetarian and it's worth trying those with a single shelled, cooked pea. Most fish love peas and it's a health food for them.

One sad thing is that almost all fish will eat other fish if they can catch them. One moment you have a tiny fish swimming in your aquarium - the next moment it is gone and one of your bigger fishes is a little fatter. (The bigger, fatter fish may be listed as vegetarian, too.) It's usually not safe to keep any fish with tankmates that they can get into their mouths.

depends what kind of fish, if it's a pet store fish then you can buy the food when you buy the fish, most eat fish food-but other fish, I mean sharks are fish and they eat meat

They try to eat lasers. I found this out by accident; our two Pearl Gouramis like to chase the dot from a low power laser pointer around their tank, I guess they think it's some sort of edible pondlife.

Warning to kiddies: Never point a laser *at* any animal's eyes (including fish), there's a risk you could blind them.
