Whew! Just one?
I can give you five of my favorites (if you're talking original soundtracks, not adapted from other sources:
(in no particular order)
1. The Great Escape-Elmer Bernstein
2. To Kill a Mockingbird-Elmer Benstein
3. King Kong (1933)-Max Steiner
4. The Lord of the Rings (trilogy)-Howard Shore
5. Romeo and Juliet-(Nino Rota)
I can't give you a best--that's always a matter of opinion.

I would have to say The Crow soundtrack. It had bands from NIN to Deftones...to my all time favorite band STP. It came out in 1994..but I haven't found a better soundtrack then that since then.

Forrest Gump.
Quoted from its Amazon page:
"Opening with Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog", this is a fine anthology of three decades of American music, taking in everything from Joan Baez's "Blowin' In The Wind" to Aretha Franklin's "Respect", The Mammas and The Papas' "California Dreamin'" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson". Here also is Scott McKenzie with "San Francisco", plus Jefferson Airplane, the Supremes, Lynyrd Skynrd and many more."

If you're talking about original soundtrack, I'd have to say "Glory", which has some great music.
If you're talking about songs used in the movie, "Saturday Night Fever" is the biggest selling movie album ever, so you can't go wrong with that.

It's a tie between the Big Easy and The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler. It had great hard to find songs from the early 80's.

The original Star Wars soundtrack. It was completely new and fresh and was at the top of pop charts and classical charts.
