just empty out a little more then half of the water then add it back with fresh tap water making sure its not to hot or to cold then add the chemicals your tank needs but you should get a python hose so that you can vacuum out your gravel and get all the yucky stuff out. for more information go to http://www.aquariacentral.com/ register as a new user when it asks you who recommended you put Fish_Freak {don't forget the underscore} and when your done post a new thread people at that sight can better answer your fish questions.
ALSO YOU DON'T NEED TO TAKE THE FISH OUT ITS NOT NECESSARY

It's best to add water that's already conditioned, especially if you are adding back 40%. The water also should be very close to the same temperature as the water in the aquarium. If you can tell the difference in temps by putting your hand in the water, it should be added veerrrry slowly,to avoid stressing the fish, and possibly starting an Ich infestation. It would be better for the fish to do twice as many 20% changes. Also clean some of the gravel by siphoning. Your fish will like it. PeeTee ------ One more thing,it's better if you can let the water sit overnite after adding the chemicals.

You take some of the water out of the tank, and put into a bucket, about 3/4 of the bucket with water, get your fish out of the tank into the bucket. Put a piece of newspaper on top of the bucket so they don't jump out. Then you go about cleaning the rest of the tank, when done add the new water and the chemicals, let sit for a while, get the water at room temperature before adding the fish back in the tank. Hope this helps, I do it that way and have never loss a fish..

I have a large tank. (55Gal) I fill up a clean bucket with tap water then add my chemicals to the bucket and mix. I have never had any problems with my fish doing it that way. You can go to a hardware store and get a bucket. They have a 5gal. and I think a 2gal. in the paint section. Hope that answers your question

Mix the chemicals in with the water, and then put it in the tank. Also make sure the water is the right temperature depending on the type of fish you have. Add it slowly as not to startle the poor fishies :)

what you need to do is get a siphon and suck out some water then get the chlorine and other harmful metal remover chemical(s) and add it to the water in a bucket, wait about 15 min and add it to the tank,

you take 40% out, then put in the new water in a bucket and put the cleaning stuff in.
