The knee joint has two cushions that sit between the end of your thigh bone and your lower leg bone (femur and tibia respectively). The one on the inner side of the knee is the medial meniscus. The one on the outer side of the knee is the lateral meniscus. These are cartilaginous cushions that provide shock absorption for the knee.

I think the real statement would be lateral meniscal horizontal body cleavage tear with trace joint effusion. What has happened in all liklihood is that she's torn the lateral meniscus...most likely along the outermost portion where the lateral collateral ligament of the knee attaches to it and the resultant inflammation has caused fluid to collect in that space.

She tore the shock absorber that lies at the knee. While tearing it, the aggrivation caused some fluid to build up there (thats the diffusion part).

I think she ruptured her meniscus on the outside part of the knee.
