So.....the other half has won a weeks skiing in Bulgaria. Never having been before, suggestions as to what gear is neccessary would be gratefully received (ie single or 2-piece suits etc). Hardware is included, as is instruction.

As said above - 2 piece for sure - I actually use coverall ones by Marmott - that I would highly recommend - waterproof and warm. Plus because they cover my lower back under my coat - when I tumble in powder - I don't get snow up my back. As a beginning skiier - you will really want this and so it is a must - staying dry means a longer more comfy day.

Coat - I have an Arcteryx one that is great - but they are expensive - so invest in what you can afford based on how much you think you will use it in future. I have had my Arcteryx coat for 4 years now - and it still looks new, but it has been used heaps.

Gloves - I prever having really good gear here as - cold fingers is something that annoys me when I ski. So again - I have Marmott gloves that are waterproof and filled with down. For a beginner skiier - make sure that you have strong backing on the hands - as you are more likely to use rope tows to start and this can reek havok on flimsy material. Plus make sure that they go just past your wrists and can tighten on the ends against your arm - this prevents snow getting in - you getting wet and therefore cold.

Goggles - needed for if it snows - I never invested in expensive ones when I started skiing - because I didn't use them every day I skiied - and there were other areas I felt more important in investing for comfort. Sunnies - good idea as it gets bright on the clear days and it saves the eyes from wind too.

I have a neck warmer - for when I ski in cold conditions - needed if at extreme temps. I have skiied at Whistler when it got past -20 and we were not allowed up by mountain unless we had them because of wind chill factors with temp could cause frost bite.

Lastly a hat - something that covers your ears - but if you don't have one that does - you can get a headband to do the trick.

Oh - nearly forgot - but you will want to invest in really warm ski socks - this will be important for warmth and comfort in your boots. Make sure they are long enough to get to the top of boot.

Any thing else is optional - like I personally really like to layer and wear polypropalene under my ski gear - but this is not necessary.

Hope this helps - and have fun. Don't forget the sunscreen and chapstick too with SPF!!!

Here's a simple list.

* Winter jacket (should be water proof)
* snow pants
* gloves (should be water proof)
* hat
* turtleneck plus a sweater underneath for cold weather
* ski goggles or sun glasses
* long underwear is good in cold weather
* long socks

For extra warm you can buy disposal handwarmers that you can put in your gloves.

1 piece vs. 2 piece suites wont matter a lot in terms of functionality or warmth. If you fall a lot in deep snow a 1 piece suit does a better job in keeping snow out, however 1 piece suits are seen as very 80's aesthically.

Jees, avoid all in one suits, they're super '80s and really naff. Get yourself some thermals to go underneath ( a few sets, tops and legs, cos they tend to ming pretty quick) and then get yourself down to tkmaxx and get some cheap salopettes and a jacket. Subdued colours if at all possible.
Gloves are pretty important too, they keep hands protected to some extent. If you are skiing, get ski gloves, not snowboard gloves. The latter tend to have very heavy duty rubberised fingers and palms to cope with the wear of boarders dragging them in the snow and ice. They make gripping ski poles quite tricky. A decent pair of socks will help boot comfort
And a hat. Not a stupid one. something neutral that covers your ears.

well unless your a picture of perfection and conform to regualr sizes i would recomend a 2 piece suit. a good pair of ski goggles is essential tinted as well to reduce the glare from the snow. a good hat or scarf thing that covers the ears, what ever is prefered. a good pair of gloves as well if you cant dry them over night get a 2nd pair as well. get some thermal stuff for under the ski suit. remember several layers is better than one thick one. sun cream or sun block would be a good idea as well
