I swear it's a cell phone addiction! I hate cell phones. At the movies, in the stores, in restaurants, while driving. waiting in line at the DMV. It's everywhere!! Even young children are walking around with cell phones stuck to their ears. My cell stays in the car, and usually turned off. If it's important, leave a message.

There are legitimate reasons, of course, and the phone can be put on vibrate by caring persons. But most of the ones I've encountered just wanted to stay in touch with whoever while they were eating, shopping, or doing nothing. It is universal; while I was in Rome, my husband and I laughted as a man and a woman each talked on their phones to others, while on a date. It seems most people in Rome have a phone attached to their ear. We found it amusing, but I'm sure if I lived there it would be bothersome. In California, I am not out and about so much at the moment, but when I am, and a person speaks too loud, I ask them to speak more softly. If they are offended, so be it, as I, too, am offended having to hear what she is going to do in an hour, what does her husband want for dinner, or whatever. I used to laugh at my daugher calling her husband to see if he wanted a taco picked up on her way home, but I caught myself doing it the other day. Why? Poor planning, I had forgot to ask my spouse before leaving home. I'm trying to break this new habit I'm picking up, because if I find it offensive in others, they surely find it offensive in me. I have the phone for contact only with my husband; no one else has the number. I want more than a quick phone call to a dear friend later in the day, rather than trying to squeeze 4 projects into one. When I needed a phone to receive calls from patients, I always pulled over to the side of the road for the call, to give uninteruppted attention to the caller.
Each person has their reasons, I guess. Hopefully, we all can become better attuned to those around us...which I sadly see slipping away.

I try to step out of the restaurant if I need to have an important conversation. Important as in: My friend is on life support, should I fly to Iowa to see him before his family takes him off of life support? or something truly important. Most phone calls can wait till a more appropriate time and the cell phones can be set to silent or vibrate. It is sad that we are so tied to our phones, isn't it?

Because some people are very rude. It's just like hearing a cell phone in a movie. Or seeing bright lights coming from cell phones when they are text messenging. It's people being rude and selfish.

I do agree that phone conversations are annoying but I will admit that I take mine with me wherever I go. My husband is deployed in Iraq and I don't want to miss a call from him, but I do keep my phone on vibrate and as soon as I answer the phone I leave the room and either go outside or to a hallway so I disturb as few people as possible.

I guess it depends on what restaurant you are in. If you are in a nice romantic spot with quiet music and low lighting and the menu is filled with food you cannot pronounce....no, you shouldn't answer your cell phone...or at the very least, excuse yourself.
If you are sitting in Chile's or Applebees or Ruby Tuesday, sorry, I don't think anyone talking on their phone is annoying. Watch the tvs up in the corner and don't pay attention.

I don't get that. What's the difference? Whether they're talking on a cell phone or talking to someone they're with, you're still going to hear them. Are you sure you just don't like hearing people talk when you eat?

Because people have too much anxiety and are cant de-program their mind for a couple hours. Its rude to answer the call at the table and you should at least excuse yourself and go to the restroom. If you must bring the phone with you at least turn off your ringer and if you must answer/call do it outside!

You are eating at the wrong restaurants.
I eat out 5 to 6 nights a week. This costs roughly $500.00 per week.
I do not experience this problem. (I assure you if I did hear it, I would solve it in less then one minute")
Bottom line;
Eat at Denny's = eat with rats. whatever you get you deserve.
Step up to what? Boston Market, Knock yourself out.
Then what? American dining, They all suck only some more than others. Apple&&&&&&&&
oUT %%%%%%%%
chILL)))) BABY********
Who cares? all of the chains suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Real restaurants serve great food in a great environment.
If Ruby Tuesdays is not getting it for you, you have two options.
1. Stop going to crap places, and expecting miracles....
2. Get your cash out Jr. Good restaurants are not free.
The places I eat, I have never, (not one time in 7 years had an interuption by a cell call). Period.........................
This tells me that you may be eating in the wrong places.
Only cash can help you. GOT SOME?

I dont think they bring their phone in there to feel importan but mostly for safety reasons. If they need to be reached say by a relative because of a death or illness, it is nice to have beside you at all times.
