They are basically for the same purpose. Body wash is a thinner substance and soapier. And body gel (if its the type you wash with and not the gel you use as lotion) is a thicker substance and is more for scent as it's stronger and will come in many different scents, however its usually not a great cleanser.
**Body gel as a lotion is just a for of moisturizer/lotion thats usually scented strongly as well.

Body wash has a more soapy effect which gel makes your body look more glossy and shiny. Body wash rinses off with no moisturizing effect which gel has a better apperance on your skin.

Body wash lathers easier and is solely for...well...washing. Body gel doesn't lather much and is used both for washing and smelling good when you're done.
