baby makes a hormone that gets into the amniotic fluid to the placenta and into the mother's blood. Then the mother's body makes the oxytocin that causes the contractions. So, the baby kinda determines when it's born. But the mother's body can definitely begin labor before the baby is ready...

There is some evidence that when the baby's lungs are mature enough, they secret a hormone that tells the mother's body that it is time for delivery.
I haven't been able to find much research on it but it is a start. But then, it doesn't explain why some women go over 42 weeks or why some women go into labor early.

Well, I think it's more the body. I mean sometimes women have their babies extremely early...ya know 26 weeks or whenever and clearly the baby isn't "ready" to be born then. It is funny how everyone says that the baby will come when the baby is ready but I think it's more when your body is ready and hopefully the baby is fully ready then it will happen.
