The Rare Gases, the Noble Gases, actually the gaseous elements in Group VIII of the periodic table. These are helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon.
Actually, in 1965 or so, chemists at Purdue University found that xenon reacted with fluorine to form xenon tetrafluoride, XeF4. So, if you got it to learn from your chemistry teacher that the Inert Gases (as they are also called) do not react, this is the new chemistry of the inert gases. krypton has also been found to form compounds with fluorine. When xenon fluorides (there are more of them!) react with water, they form xenon oxides. The list of Group VIII compounds continues to grow!

group VIII gases do not react at all because it's outer shell is already full (complete valance shell), thus are not involved in chemical reactions.
they're also known as the noble gases.
