A group of friends of mine were discussing things that we have done in our lives that we most regret. During the conversation one of the ladies stated that she had done tons of things she wasn't proud of and regretted highly, though these things have resulted in her learning valuable life lessons. She did not wish to give us any info on what things she was referring to, though she did say that she wants to talk about her "life events". Of course another woman in the group immediately suggested she should talk to a psychiatrist while another woman said that she should create a blog under an anonymous name to share her story and help anyone who has gone through something similar.

So that made me think... can a blog be used to help someone get a tough issue off their chest or should something like that be left to a trained professional?

Any kind of writing can help you with any emotional issue you may have, particularly if writing is relatively easy for you. For example, I use this site as therapy. My husband has terminal cancer, and I do a lot of writing here during the hours when he needs to rest and sleep. It takes me away for a while from the chaos that is cancer, and while doing it I maybe help a few people along the way, and occasionally get the opportunity to address my own issue as I am doing now. Most of us don't need trained professionals for most life issues, though it can certainly help. However, self-help, such as a blog, is very therapeutic.

Of course it can. Writing a blog is the exact same thing as writing in a journal or diary and many phsycologists and psychiatrists recommend writing in a journal to their patients. It is very therapuetic to do write down your feelings on paper; even if you rip it up afterwards. There are some websites where you can create an online journal and it doesn't have to be public is you don't want it to. It can be set to private.

OFCOURSE!

as owadays blogging is starting to became a mass media in another way for amateurs, it can be helpig for anyone! there are many many blogs on news on media on movies on marketing o books..... so it can be a helping hand this too...

i am afraid that it can be more helping for that who is writing, because psychiatric problems needs always an answer ... but there are many tools on the web what can make a blog interactive!

good luck!

I think it could be the only way though would be to do it under a pen name one that no one would guess so you could be totally honest.

I think so. You're getting it out, instead of bottling it up. That's always a good thing :) Hope it all works out for you!
