My cellphone scroller/joystick doesn't work very well?

I have a sony ericsson k700i, the scroller/joystick doesn't seem to work very well. Is it a cleaning problem or is gone bad internally. I tried cleaning by removing face plate of the phone and i managed to clean the dust of the roller. It worked a bit better.

It is like a keyboard!!! if you always use that or over use it might not work well!!! so better to use shortcut keys!!!!
