John Adams didn't really have many obstacles. He was born wealthy, and had a good road laid down for him societally and educationally by his parents.
During the Revolutionary War, he had to worry about being captured by the British, I suppose, but that never came close to happening.
During his presidency, he had issues with a split in his political party between his moderate Federalists and the more radical faction of the party, which believed in a stronger Federal power, and speech restrictions, and were led by Alexander Hamilton Adams messed up by keeping many of Washington's cabinet, who were aligned with Hamilton, and also, due to a quirk of the electoral voting system back then, which was created before political parties were, got stuck with his chief Democratic-Republican party rival Thomas Jefferson as his vice president. Adams also messed up and probably cost himself re-election by signing the Alien and Sedition Acts, which were a series of four laws designed allegedly to save the country from foreign dangerous influences and traitors, but in reality were designed to stop criticism of the Federalist party leadership in congress and president Adams. Adams lost his reelection bid in 1800 to Thomas Jefferson, and had his reputatoin harmed by his connection to the Alien and Sedition Acts. Making peace with France helped split his party a little more, and his appointment of "midnight judges" angered a lot of Democratic-Republicans.
I suppose personally his son Charles dying in 1800 due to alcoholism could be seen as an obstacle as well.

I don't know what mr_ljdavid is talking about, but John Adams was not wealthy, he did not have his future laid otu for him. He was born into a somewhat poor family that did nothing but farm.
And to say he wasn't in danger from the british is absurd. Going over to France in 1778 in the dead of winter where your chances of survival were almost fifty/fifty onboard the frigate Boston, his ship faced off with a British one that if they had caught him would have hanged him on the spot.
He also had to secure multiple loans from the dutch that if he didn't might have cost the United States the entire war. Yet, he secured them.
It's sad because John Adams might be the most udnerrated American ever and most of us have no clue what he did. He gets squashed in the middle fo thomas Jefferson and George Washington, who were great people nevertheless.
