i was looking through an old irish religious journal because it is always interesting to read the old adverts. i saw an advert for the magdalene sisters laundry. it said penitence paid for through housework and laundry. how utterly disturbing.

joe doc i don't know whether your answer is supposed to be a joke but it is racist and exactly the sort of attitude that contributes to the very moments in history that i refer to

I know what you mean, I've been doing my dissertation on the Cotton Famine, specifically in Blackburn, and when you see how much the cotton industry was integrated into the town in the 19th century, and how many people worked within it and its service industries, its frightening to think of the suffering that people had to endure.

Sadly religious people made and still do make mistakes. As you say that is disturbing. They should have known better. Paedophiles should have been rooted out as well. But I think The Church as a whole is a great power for good. Satan tempts us all so none of us can say we have done nothing wrong. There is something redemptive about mercy I think. Justice falls a way behind this. I'll get off my soapbox now and shut up.
