I'm guessing that if the masking tape didn't come up easily right away, it had been left there for some time - here's the best method i've found over the years:
- If you have a good coat of paint over the tape where you were using it to mask, you may want to score it lightly with a sharp utility knife, to avoid peeling off your new paint as you work. Just enough pressure to cut the paint without gouging the wood / whatever underneath - just follow the edge of the tape.
- use a plastic scraper / putty knife to remove as much of the tape as possible - a metal putty knife or scraper will likely damage the tile.
- if you are left with a sticky glue residue on the tile, first try soap and water - don't flood the floor, it will make your tile unstick. Just a dampened rag. You might have to scrub a bit.
- If the soap and water don't take the residue off, you can try a solvent like paint thinner - again, just a lightly dampened rag, don't soak the floor. You should wipe the area with a light soap and water solution afterwards to remove any oily residue from the solvent. Also, when using any type of solvent, it's always best to test it on a hidden area first to be sure it doesn't discolor or damage the tile.
Good luck!

Carefully,, not that I think that the tiles would lift up...their glue should be stronger than tape. If the tape was put down like a week ago, you will find that it does alot of ripping. It has dried up. All you can do is continue to scrap it off the tile using a wood edge of somesort(popsicle stick type of an idea or maybe a butter knife(no serrated teeth) For the glue that remains, dab a little paint thinner on a piece of cloth and go at it with your finger behind the cloth.
You left it too long.
Also you should cut a seperation between the paint and the tape on the finished edge otherwise the tape will lift off the paint and leave a jagged edge - Again, leaving the tape on too long.

WD 40 works great for getting lables, tree sap and other sticky stuff off of things. Just make sure to clean the area with a good degreaser afterwards.

Windex is a wonder. Spray on the area and let it set for a bit to work on the adhesive. Might need to take a scraper, preferably non metal, reapply the windex as it dries
