I don't believe in belief, but that's another story!
However, as Shakespeare said "there are more things in Heaven and Earth than dreamt of in your philosophy". These are truly very wise words and the immediate response of the public in general to the notion of astrology is one of mockery. People form opinions without any knowledge of subjects a great deal of the time - normally just because 'everybody else thinks that way' and it becomes your opinion too without realising that its merely unthinking prejudice.
Astrology may or may not be crappola, but remember the following when you are being dismissive about the subject:
Our calendars are based on planetary influence.
Our 'day' and 'night' are based on planetary influence.
Our seasons are based on planetary influence.
The ocean's tides are based on planetary influence.
All of the preceding things can be PREDICTED into the future, i.e. you know when night is going to be based on looking at a clock.
And of course, finally your life is part of the planet. You don't exist without the planet Earth and it's relationship with the Sun and Moon, so to a certain degree at least, there is no doubt that the celestial bodies have SOME influence over us. As to whether they can be brought to the mundane level of timing human affairs, that's open to question, but definitely not the open and shut case most believe it to be.
Note: Nothing is to be inferred here. I'm not saying yay or nay, just giving you pause for thought...
P.S.
I have a thumbs down already and I know I'm biased (Hell, I have a huge ego!), but I KNOW that nothing I said was dumb, so the only answer is that the person/people who gave me it, most definitely ARE dumb! :-)
Addendum for Chainlightning:
And here's me thinking I didn't have to be so pedantic for once. :-)
Yes, you are correct in virtually everything you say and I apologise for using the term 'planetary influence' so much, although with regard to calendars, earlier ones DID involve the other planets in their timing and it has filtered down to the names we use for the days of the week. Monday = Moon day, Saturday = Saturn day, etc. Also, you say : "Astrology uses science to find where the planets are in relation to the earth not the sun". This is not entirely true. There are both Geocentric (Earth based) and Heliocentric (Sun based) forms of astrology.
However, regardless of your reply, you have admitted that LIFE on Earth is regulated to some degree, by cosmic happenings. Your point of contention is that there is no proof that this extends to the planets and all the mundane things that astrology posits related to them. If you read my post again, you will see that I don't for one second say that astrology has any basis, what I do say is not to be so quick to judge. You continue by saying that there is no scientific evidence for astrology, but as with every subject under the Sun (excuse the pun), there are varying thoughts on this. If you wish to get really scientific, SCIENCE is itself often times not very scientific and is geared as much by strong personalities as any other field. If you do some research you will find that people like Pythagoras, Kepler, Newton and the psychologist Carl Jung were great believers that astrology worked. I personally think they are wrong, but at the same time, they were undoubtedly great minds and so to be utterly dismissive without categorical evidence is itself not scientific. Also, when it comes to your argument about 'forces' that are exerted from planets amounting to almost nothing, you make the mistake that many people do and that's thinking that our present generation has discovered EVERY force there is. Science is an on going investigation, not a finished conclusion. New discoveries are made all the time, so there may be forces more subtle than can be picked up my our present tools... or there may not be, who knows for sure either way? Do you, really?
When you say: "Also they have no effect on the water in your body's cells as the tides work only on unbinded water.", this doesn't really make any sense. Apart from meaning 'unbound' rather than 'unbinded', all water is bound to an extent. If we are being logical about it, the puny constraints of a body are nothing compared with the gravitational forces required to move OCEANS!
I do know that there is a branch of astrology called 'financial astrology' and there are many adherents you would consider sober, down to Earth (there I go again with the puns) people who use this to make business decisions and invest in the stock market. One early twentieth century practitioner by the name of W.D. Gann took $50,000,000 from the markets and purportedly it was down to using 'the stars' to time market turns.
As I say, I personally don't think it is true, but I cannot be categorical about it and if you are honest, neither can you. I finish by returning to my quote by Shakespeare. Ego and the constant belief that 'we alone' are correct is a great folly the human species suffers from.
One last thing: You say to attack the argument and not the arguer. They are indivisble. The argument IS the arguer. In other words, the argument is an expression of YOUR thought and as thought IS the amorphous 'you', they are one and the same. This does not mean that there is any malice in my reply, just pointing out that the belief that they are two different things is erroneous.

A little retort.
The orbit of earth around the sun (a star) is responsible for our calender not other planets.
Our day and night is due to the rotation of the earth not other planets.
Our seasons are the result of the elliptical orbit of the earth, tilt of the earth's axis, and uneven heating of the sun. Not by influence of other planets.
The tides are due to the gravitational infuence of mostly the moon (because it is so close) and the sun (much less because of distance) not the other planets. Pick up a book from a table and you put more stress on the earth than Mars does. The times of the tides are known but the effects differ around the world. Also they have no effect on the water in your body's cells as the tides work only on unbinded water.
It is obvious the Sun, being a star provides the only source of light and heat is what counts. The only object in the solar system one can sense.
Astrology uses science to find where the planets are in relation to the earth not the sun. But astrology is not science. The positions, angles, and such are what is important. No type of energy is omited except for the sun.
Oh yeah, the ones that believe the most, spend the most time and money.
Attack the argument not the arguer.
"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science."
Charles Darwin

Before commenting one should know the subject thoroughly. The world is not divide into 9 zodiac signs either. every indivisual is different. we see our sign not by the month but the time, date and place where we were born.the sign is determined by the placement of moon on the sign. the change in tide is caused by the moon so is the mood. One cannot have a mood which remains constant. Now sign is one thing and the placement of planets in the houses is another. please do not determine a person on the basis of signs. There are 12 houses 9 signs and the moon remains in each sign for two hours. Its a great science and the person seeing it might be wrong as medicine is not wrong, the doctor giving the medicine might choose the wrong medicine. Beware of people(astrologers) claiming they can change things in your life.

Why are you even in this section if you don't believe in this stuff??? It's OK if you don't believe in it, but don't put down the people that do. What I don't understand is why so many unbelievers like you are always in this section asking the same question. If you don't believe in something why waste your time talking about it or reading it???? By the way I think everything I just said made sense.

I slightly do. I mean, some of it does come true, yet some of it doesn't. I just go with the flow, and if it happens, it happens. If not, then oh well. Not like we have to make a federal case out of it.

I am a Leo and I have my symbol tattooed on the back of my neck.
I am the complete definition of a Leo.
Fluke or proof of Astrology?
People with specific names make more money than those with other names.
It's one of those crazy things that will never be able to be explained....

I never could tell if I believed it. I started to read my horoscope at the end of the day so I am not trying to make it true throughout the day. But I must say, 3/4 of the time it is true.
