Get a good air purifier. My mother in law bought the Oreck one and it works great for getting rid of cooking smells in her house. They have one in the den and one in their bedroom and it also helps keep the dust levels down...which is good for her asthma.

first, you should buy an air filter, that will really help. Another thing you can do is buy an orange and peel it in your room. squeeze a couple of fresh drops on your carpet around the place and let the peel sit in your room for a while, I did that once and it helped a lot! (Don't use orange juice... you'll need the orange peel.) OR even better, buy a big orange and some cloves. carefully poke cloves all over into the orange peel and leave them there... the smell it creates is probably what heaven must smell like... it is SO GOOD. For the most noticeable effect you should use several clove oranges, and keep them in your room 'till they get icky. But the BEST combination would be to buy the air filter, use it for two weeks until your room has no smell at all, and THEN use the cloves and oranges. Your room will smell so nice after that!!

The are a couple of things you can do. Grow Rosemary and lavender in your yard. It smells wonderful dried or in fresh water in your room, and, in closets and drawers. I open my windows almost everyday to get fresh air moving around as I have two pugs. Once a month or so I'll put down some Arm and Hammer and then vacuum it up. Good luck, I'm on the same quest you are!

We have 2 dogs and 3 cats, I keep my house smelling fresh by having reed diffusers in each room. They are not overbearing, and there are mild scents, and ones that do not smelling perfumy. When I want a strong scent for a moment, I flip the reeds around and it gives the room a quick burst of aroma. Here is a website that you can check them out. They are available at places like bed, bath and beyond.

I'd contact a local PartyLite representative. I think I could even help you if you don't have one. There is a product called reed diffusers. Some local stores carry them, and they'd work I guess, except that the local ones have alcohol in them and the PartyLite ones are pure essential oil. Ours run 39.95 and should last a year. I have three in my house and LOVE them. Much cheaper than having plug ins, which "claim" to last 30 days but don't, AND they are not a fire hazard. BONUS!!!!!!
Seriously, I am big into a "fresh" smelling house too, these really are awesome and I really believe you would be happy with one.

Open the windows and turn on a fan full blast. Then vacuum the carpets and make sure everything is dusted and cleaned. Real fresh air is the best way to make the room smell like fresh air.

put white vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz that in the carpet. The vinegary smell disappears after a couple of hours taking other odors with it....including perfume. Can't get that new home smell unless you paint the walls replace the carpet and no more pets.

I found a honeydew flavour candle that wasn't over powering but got rid of the smell, Party lite sells them. I would only burn it for 15 min to half an hour a day, in the bathroom we have a stinky nappy (diaper) bin and its good for getting ride of the smell.

HEPA air filters and just setting out baking soda should remove staleness and whatever smells you've added, but that doesn't seem to be your problem ... have you looked at essential oil diffusers? The smell of this stuff is really clean and refreshing to me .. note they sell a diffuser too. (I'm not selling this product, I've just smelled it and liked it)
