I like the new Target brand too, I've seen the commercial and also the merchandise on their website, although most of the items I liked were already out of stock!
Anyways, I am a bigger girl too, I'm a size 12, 13 sometimes, and usually an L or XL, dependin on the store.
I get annoyed by stores like Hollister who make their clothes so small...their XL hoody just barely fits me!
I used to get frustrated because so many of the trendy clothes are made for such smaller bodies, and I always thought I'd have to wear plan t-shirts and sweats all the time because I'm a bigger girl! But you need to find a day and scour the biggest shopping center in your area and take your time trying everything on until you feel absolutely comfortable in them. Even if you have to try them on multiple times! Make sure you are wearing the clothes, and that the clothes aren't wearing you!
So here are some styles that I've had luck with, styles that compliment my figure...
Shirts with an empire waist
Shirts that are long sleeved, 3/4 length sleeves or 1/2 sleeves (but not sleeveless or spaghetti strap)
Pencil skirts (not A-line skirts), because pencil skirts give you a more narrow and taller look
Try not to get anything that has lines, like vertical stripes and especially horizontal. Stripes altogether just make things bigger.
I find darker colours are more slimming on bigger figures...but that does not mean you have to transform your entire wardrobe to GOTH! Try colours like a darkish black/green or indigo blue.
If you must wear pastels or other light colours, try wearing a dark or black coloured top and a light coloured bottom. You could pair a long sleeve or 3/4 sleeve black top v-neck shirt, or a wide split neck shirt with a knee length flowy skirt in LAVENDER.
Cropped shirts/jackets are nice as long as you have a longer length shirt worn underneath it. Wear a cropped jacket opened with a longer length empire waist top underneath to extend the length of your body.
Remember to always wear heels, as it accentuates your legs and make them appear slimmer than they normally are, and they also make you appear taller. Right now, peep-toe (not open toe) heels are in, make sure they are at least 1.5 inches high.
Don't over accessorize, or you'll look ridiculous! Try a thick hairband or a long oversized beaded necklace. I wouldn't try tying a silk scarf around your neck though, as that would chop you up and make you look short and stumpy.
I live in Canada, so I'm not sure what stores you should look at. I'm not sure exactly how BIG you are, but I am able to fit into the clothes from H&M, Express and The Limited and also Club Monaco, and also if you have a bigger budget, you can always try Nordstroms....but definitely stay away from Abercrombie and Hollister...also Bebe and Forever 21...even I can't fit into them!
Here are a list of some stores with WEBSITES if you wanted to get some fashion ideas, even though these stores are located in Canada.
Le Chateau
H&M
Club Monaco
Smart-set
Wish you luck! Email me if you need more help...make sure you try on everything at a store, and if you choose to buy it, don't take the tags off until you decide you want to wear it one day...only because many people buy on impluse, or they like it when they bought it, then it didn't look as nice when they got home!

You could try Rave,WetSeal, and DEB. I know DEB has alot of sizes for curvier girls. I hope I helped some. Go here: http://www.debshops.com/Fashion/ViewInCat.asp?catid=4 At the location near me they actually have more options then the ones on the website (they have like half a store or more of plus sizes) Also they have great sales (Most of their clothes are to big for me ATM though because I'm at that akward stage between the girl's section and Juniors.)

Alot of these suggestions are good but if you want anything even slightly alternative (gothic/punk) try Torrid. www.torrid.com plus if you join their Diva Style program (its free) after you spend $250 you get 5% off every purchase for a year! Great way to save money too.

Kohl's has amazing jeans! 'SO' is the best! their jeans stretch, but they don't overdo it. I recommend that you go with flares to draw attention away from your hips, camis with a sweater with a deep V-neck works great.........They have cute sweaters at Kohl's for, like $12.............Go with vertical stripes to make you look slimmer and taller-e.g. most jeans have extrememly faint vertical lines running the length of the legs-these jeans tend to look better on most people. Use bulky necklaces, dangly earrings, etc. to pull a person's focus away from your waistline and to the accessories.

Old Navy, Torrid, JcPenny. A-line skirts flatter every figure. Stay away from horizontal stripes. They will make you look wider. Inside stick with vertical stripes they will make you appear taller, longer, and thinner.
