I believe it is a very good field.
It should appeal to people with good mathematical skills, who would like to use a variety of techniques in problems that generally come from outside the field of mathematics. These may include physics, engineering, computer science, chemistry, biology, medicine, economics, finance, or other places. The range and depth of applications continues to grow each year. In some of these fields (mathematical finance, for example) compensation can be lucrative.
As an applied mathematician you could work as an academic at a university, but you might alternatively work in industry.

Depends if you like math or not. Also, there are many areas of applied mathematics. Teaching, engineering, research. Do you like working more hands on or are you more of a theoretical person? That's one question you need to ask.
