Why or why not?

The law is based on a faulty claim of ferrets being able to form feral colonies. When in fact, most ferrets being sold are already spayed/neutered. Most ferrets could not even survive outdoors. They are domestic creatures and have been domesticated since ancient Egypt.

Marshall Farms is the major ferret breeder in the United States. Go to a pet store, ask where they got their ferrets, and I guarantee they will tell you Marshall Farms. Marshall farms spays and neuters all their animals. And most ferret breeders will have their customers sign an agreement to have the ferret fixed at the proper age. And I argue the point of their domestication because people believe them to be wild animals. It takes 3 generations of breeding to become a domestic animal. They are well beyond that. And as for mauling or hurting children, why on EARTH would you leave a child alone with ANY animal?! That's not the animals fault, it's crappy parenting. Punish the deed, not the breed.

YES! I don't have one, but have been thinking about it. I live in the Bay Area and I've heard I can buy one in Reno pretty easily and bring it back with me. I heard they were illegalized after a few incidents involving ferrets killing babies. Pets shouldn't be regulated because of potential harm. Otherwise, we should illegalize the ownership of dogs. It's up to the owner to keep the ferrets in check.

Ferrets should be legalized. My ferret would starve outdoors. She sometimes cannot find treats on the floor. I think cats and ferrets should not be left alone with children. Dogs, at least some, are much better. I saw a small child hitting the family dog once. It probably did not hurt that much. Finally the dog got tired of it. The dog reach around and grabbed the child's arm in his teeth. It did not bite him just grabbed the arm and held it. The kid was scared and the hitting stopped. A cat or ferret would just scratch or bite. I keep my ferret in a cage when I am not home. I only let it roam in the living room. One time it did get out of the cage. I was sleeping and and I felt something moving on the bed. For some reason I recognized it was the ferret. It just came to see me. I have also seen my ferret attack a windup, moving, stuffed toy. If it was a small animal or small bird, it would have killed it. Dogs are the best pet. However, I do not have the space or the time for a dog. A ferret requires less space, and less time.

When ferrets are outlawed, only outlaws will have ferrets!

Seriously if all pet ferrets in the state of CA had to be neutered & microchipped BEFORE sale, I say let the masses buy all the ferrets they like. A written agreement to spay/neuter the animal at a later date is no good. Ask any animal rescue organization. People simply ignore these "written agreements".

Any feral ferret could be traced back to it's owner by the microchip. The owner could be fined or the animal confiscated depending on the situation.

A breeding feral group of ferrets would be very bad for the small wildlife of CA.

For what it's worth - it takes more than 3 generations to domesticate an animal. If that were true, all the tigers in the USA would be domesticated according to your claim.

Yes their legal in many other states and we rarely hear on the news of ferret problems. That's a rediculous law in Calif anyway when peopel like Paris Hilton has a monkey and a bobcat among other strange pets.

Sure, ferrets make excellent pets - clean, friendly, lively and intelligent. Why on earth wouldn't they be legal in CA?

i wouldn't. bringing them here would effect the balance of nature if they escape and start reproducing in the wild. you know they will! they can escape through such tiny places. i heard they can fit through a hole the size of a nickel. they would probably cause a similar animal here in California to become extinct somehow because thats what happens when a new species is introduced into a different environment. they are not native to this area as far as I know.

You mean you can't have a ferret as a pet in California?
Too much legislation is so bad. The liberals/democrats want 'big brother' to govern every aspect of your life. Geez.
