The best state is North Carolina. I live in North Carolina, and Raleigh, NC (the state capital) is one of the best ranked places to live in America. Cary, NC is the 5th best place to live in America for 2006. See the list from CNN:

We have great weather here, great people, good sports, good universities, a short drive to the ocean, and the mountains. I love this state! My second choice would be Maryland.

No matter what state people tell you it is probably bec they live there and they will say their state is the best yet I am sure they complain about things in their state that sucks. I know I do. I live in NJ and there are nice things about living here and then there are bad things about living here. I have also lived in NY, CT. and WI. All as a child so I couldnt tell you as an adult what it is like.

I live in Minnesota. I really like it for the most part but I hate winter. I got my eye on moving to South Carolina.

Vermont and I don't live there. Low crime, reasonable housing, one of the highest paying minimum wages in u.s. behind oregon. Has nice colleges and all the outside activity you could want from snowmobiling to horse back riding. And the quaint beautiful seasons

I love NY! Upstate New York, to be specific, but DEFINITELY New York. The bugs, spiders, and critters aren't too big, we don't have earthquakes, tornadoes or hurricanes.
The weather isn' too hot or too cold. We get snow in the winter, usually around Christmas time, and it gets cold enough in January to cuddle up by the fire, but stays warm enough that we bundle up and go outside to play in the snow. In the summertime, there are beautiful freshwater lakes to swim in, ski on, and camp by, and breath-taking scenery all year round.
It's about three hours to anywhere....three to NYC, three to Boston, and three to Canada. It's three hours by air to Florida. Yes...New York is the best by far!!
