No easy way in Windows XP;
The best way to do it is to compress it (Zip it) using WinZip and a password-protect the zip file.
This solution is better because:
It will work for any file, not just Word or some other specific application;
It will work on and off your PC, for example, if you send it to someone via email, it's still protected by the password while in transit.
And also, the recipient doesn't need any special software, as long as they are running XP, to open the fille.

It's really easy. For example, if you have a Word document open, click on "Tools" then "Options." Under the "Security" tab, you are given the option to put a password where it says "Password to Open." If you put a password there, then click "OK" and save the Word document file, the next time you open it, it will ask for the password. I love using this feature and I use it for Excel files too.

One way of doing this would be to use WinRar. WinRar is a program that allows to compress files. When you select a file to compress, the program gives you an option to pasword protect it.
WinRar is very easy to use and seems to be free, although after a trial period you'll be asked to buy it. (you dont have to)
If you are concerned that compressing files will then take a long time to uncompress every time, choose the lowest compression method when compressing, so that the process will take mere seconds every time.

All homestead windows (particularly XP professional) have the flexibility to password guard. you may guard at startup, so no possible log on on your settings (and as a effect your records) or only your records. do not forget approximately to get sneaky with the aid of changing the call of the records and hiding the records in sub folders a minimum of two ranges deep under different record names that exist already yet are actually not on the subject remember of what you're attempting to cover.

EZ! (Only works on a folder or drive) Just right-click, then click Sharing and Security. Then, check Make this folder private. Then, whenever someone tries to access it, they have to provide the password for your account!
